Scoot Boots are successfully used for rehabilitation for all kinds of pathologies including inflammation, diseases, infections and injuries of the hoof and lower limbs.
Horses can be turned out 24/7 in Scoot Boots due to their superior breathability and drainage. Good breathability is vital in preventing a build-up of fungus and bacteria. The excellent drainage capabilities of the Scoot Boot means that the horse’s natural hoof heat will dry out any excess moisture, ensuring the hooves remain dry.
Scoot Boots have an open toe design to help relieve toe pressure. This is a necessity for laminitic horses. We also recommend using Scoot Pads if your horse has sensitive soles.

The Scoot Mud Strap is the ultimate riding accessory for those who like it extreme. It is a long, double-sided strap that is fitted between the rear vertical shank of the boot under the trail gaiter, and over either side of the pastern. It is secured by the Mud Strap Collar and the Front Straps.
The Mud Strap is made from an extremely robust TPU which stretches when placed under pressure, and if secured correctly, won’t affect the horse’s pastern.
The Mud Strap has two purposes:
- Provides ultimate security when riding in extreme conditions
- Can be used to assist hard-to-fit hooves. For example, if your horse is in between sizes, the Mud Strap can be fitted to a larger sized Scoot Boot and provide security. However you must have the correctly sized Mud Strap. The Mud Strap can also be used to obtain a more secure fit if your horse requires Scoot Pads due to sensitive soles and consequently needs a larger sized Scoot Boot.
Go to our Online Store for more information.
To put on a Scoot Mud Strap:
- Pass both sides of the strap through each side of the rear vertical shank of the Scoot Boot, under the trail gaiter. Make sure the raised ends of the Mud Straps are facing towards the front of the Scoot
- Thread one end of the Mud Strap through the Mud Strap Collar
- Slip your horse’s hoof into the Scoot and place it on the ground

- Secure both Front Straps
Check the fit of the Mud Strap by sliding your finger between the Mud Strap and your horse’s pastern. If it is feeling too tight, you may need a larger size.
Both the Pastern Strap and the Mud Strap are a source of securement for Scoot Boots.
The Pastern Strap is a long strap secured on each side of the Scoot and placed over the pastern. It is designed to help prevent the Scoot from being pulled off due to an overreach or being sucked off when riding through mud. However, it is not intended to be the primary source of securement. Each pair of Scoot Boots comes assembled with Pastern Straps and 2 extra Pastern Straps.
The Scoot Mud Strap is the ultimate riding accessory for those who like it extreme. The Mud Strap provides unparalleled security in deep mud and when riding over rough terrain. It is a long double-sided strap that is fitted between the rear vertical shank of the Scoot and over either side of the pastern. It is secured by the Mud Strap Collar and the Front Straps.
Both straps are made of an extremely robust material called thermoplastic urethane which stretches when placed under pressure, and when correctly secured, won’t affect the horse’s pastern.

The Pastern Strap is a long strap secured on each side of the Scoot and placed over the pastern. It is designed to help prevent the Scoot from being pulled off due to an overreach or being sucked off when riding through mud. However it is not intended to be the primary source of securement.
The Pastern Strap is made of very strong thermoplastic urethane and is designed to stretch when placed under pressure. The strap will not affect the horse’s pasterns if secured correctly. It also has several holes to provide the correct setting, depending on the thickness of the horse’s pasterns. To set the strap at the correct length, make sure your horse is standing upright with its legs at 90 degrees. Once secured, you should be able to place one finger under the strap at the front of the pastern.
Each pair of Scoot Boots comes assembled with Pastern Straps and 2 extra Pastern Straps.

Secure the new Front Straps on the new hardware on the Scoot Boot
Front Straps can easily be attached/unattached using a hoof pick or a pair of pliers.
Scoot Boot Trail Gaiters are easy to fit neoprene gaiters that are secured to the back of the Scoot Boot with velcro.
The Trail Gaiter protects the top of the horse’s heel bulb to prevent rubbing on horses with sensitive skin, or for horses travelling long distances. We recommend using Trail Gaiters when your horse is initially getting used to Scoot Boots.
Please ensure the gaiters are attached in the correct position to avoid debris collecting between the bulbs and the Trail Gaiter.
All new Scoot Boots come with a pair of Trail Gaiters.
Go to our Online Store for more information.
To put on Trail Gaiters:
- Open up the Trail Gaiters
- Fold the Trail Gaiter over the heel bulb straps of the Scoot Boot
- Velcro both ends of the Trail Gaiter together under the heel bulb straps
- Ensure that the Scoot Boot Trail Gaiter logo is facing the back on the outside of the Scoot Boot
Endurance Gaiters are neoprene gaiters that are fitted under the hoof and reach up the rear coronet area and around the pastern.
The Endurance Gaiter provides protection for the lower back of the pastern and the rear coronet area to prevent rubbing for sensitive skinned horses and for endurance horses travelling long distances.
Go to our Online Store for more information.
To put on Scoot Boot Endurance Gaiters:
- Insert the Endurance Gaiter pad into the Scoot Boot
- Fold the neoprene material back over the Scoot Boot and hold in place with your thumb
- Place the Scoot Boot onto your horse’s hoof by slipping the toe of the hoof into the toe of the Scoot and then give the sole of the Scoot a tap so the back straps slip over the heel bulbs. Hold the gaiter while you do this to make sure it doesn’t slip to one side
- Check the pad is sitting in the centre of the Scoot Boot. It shouldn’t be too far forward or bent up behind the back strap
- Make sure the Endurance Gaiter is covering all parts of the heel bulb, the neoprene material should sit smoothly without creases
- Secure the velcro firmly around the pastern
- Check there is no gap between the Endurance Gaiter and the pastern to reduce the chance of debris falling inside the back of the Endurance Gaiter
Horses will usually require Gaiters if they have sensitive skin or are travelling long distances. There are two types of Scoot Boot gaiters, Trail Gaiters and Endurance Gaiters.
The Trail Gaiter protects the top of the horse’s heel bulb to prevent rubbing on sensitive skinned horses, or for horses travelling long distances. We recommend using Trail Gaiters when your horse is initially getting used to Scoot Boots.
The Endurance Gaiter protects the lower back of the pastern and the rear coronet area to prevent rubbing for sensitive skinned horses and for endurance horses travelling long distances.
Scoot EVA Gaiter Tape is a soft and protective adhesive tape that can be used as an economical, homemade gaiter to protect your horse’s heel bulb and prevent rubbing.
It can be used in conjunction with, or instead of Scoot Boot Trail Gaiters.
Go to our Online Store for more information.
To apply Scoot EVA Gaiter Tape to Scoot Boots, you need a roll of 40mm (1.5 inches) wide Scoot EVA Tape, and a roll of duct tape:
- Cut a 100mm (4”) piece of EVA Gaiter Tape
- Cut a piece of duct tape of the same length and cover the foam part of your EVA Gaiter Tape. This protects the EVA Gaiter Tape and decreases the chance of rubbing
- Peel off the back of the EVA Gaiter Tape
- Place the tape on the back of the Scoot’s heel strap and fold it back firmly on itself
The Scoot Anti-Slip Shim is a non-slip Scoot accessory that can be inserted into the front of the Scoot Boot between the hoof and the Scoot.
Anti-Slip Shims can be used as a filler to provide a firmer fit when the hoof is in between Scoot Boot sizes or the hoof has shrunk due to dry conditions. It can also provide extra security when the hoof gets wet and becomes slippery.

Scoot Pads are made of thermoplastic urethane that fit in the sole of Scoot Boots.
Scoot Pads provide relief to horses with sensitive soles and give a firmer fit when the hoof is in between Scoot Boot sizes.
We only recommend using Scoot Pads if necessary. Most horses do not require pads in Scoot Boots. Using Scoot Pads may affect the fit of your Scoots and you may need to go up a size to accommodate pads. Please contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com if you need any assistance with fitting your Scoot Pads.

Yes, Scoot Pads can be used in Scoot Slims.
As Scoot Boots are the same length as Scoot Slims, the width of the Scoot Pads need to be cut down to fit in the sole of the Scoot Slims. You can use scissors, a knife or a cutting blade.
Scoot Ice Studs are small metal studs inserted into the bottom of Scoot Boots to enhance your horse’s traction on slippery surfaces, such as ice.
If you insert Ice Studs into the bottom of your Scoot Boots, you will not be able to return your Scoot Boots for a refund or exchange.
Go to our Online Store for more information.
To insert Ice Studs into the bottom of Scoot Boots:
- Select the required position to insert the Ice Studs. You need an equal amount of Ice Studs on each side of the Scoot Boot and in the same position
- Drill a starting hole with a handheld battery drill with a 3/16” drill bit, 5mm (1/4”) deep into the Scoot. Do not drill completely through the sole of the Scoot
- Insert the Ice Stud tool from the Scoot Ice Studs Pack into the drill and slowly screw the Ice Studs into the prepared holes made in the sole of the Scoot
- Ensure the head of the Ice Stud is sitting snug against the sole of the Scoot
Remove Ice Studs from your Scoot Boots when they are not needed. To remove the Ice Studs, set the drill to reverse and slowly remove the studs. You can still use your Scoots without the studs and the removed Ice Studs can be used again.
If you insert Ice Studs into the bottom of your Scoot Boots, you will not be able to return your Scoots for a refund or exchange.

We recommend that gluing be undertaken by people who are skilled and experienced in gluing hoof boots.
To prepare Scoot Skins for gluing:
- Put on protective eye equipment and latex gloves
- Attach a wire brush to a cordless drill and rough up the inside of the Skins until all factory polish has been removed
- Clean the inside of the Skins with a rag and methylated spirits
- Cut a piece of cloth tape and stick it across the slots on both sides and the opening at the front on the outside of the Skins
To glue Scoot Skins:
- Use a heat gun or hair dryer to dry the hoof
- Use the back of a rasp to rasp off any oil or dirt off the hoof wall
- Use a sanding block to sand off any remaining dirt or oil
- Clean off any loose particles from the hoof with a rag and methylated spirits
- Once the methylated spirits has dried, the hoof is ready for gluing
- Place a piece of masking tape over the vents on the outside of the Skins. This allows the glue to penetrate the area and form a plug
- Check the fit of the prepared Skins on the hoof. It should be snug at the front of the Skins with the toe forward. On the side of the hoof, the Skins should sit below the hairline. On the back of the hoof there should be no excessive overhang of the heel bulbs
- Mark the centre of the hoof with a pencil so the Skins will be straight and centred when you glue them on
- Fit the Adapter into the bottom of the Shufit Glue and put it in the glue applicator
- Remove the lid off the glue and attach the Mixing Tip
- Test the glue before putting it in the Skins, it should turn a light grey colour
- Generously apply the glue to each side, inside of the Skins
- Place the hoof on a hoof stand
- Open the Skins
- Lift the hoof and place one side of the Skins onto the hoof, and then place the other side onto it
- Place the hoof back on the hoof stand and smooth out the glue
- Wrap the hoof in plastic wrap and hold the hoof above the ground for 2-3 minutes
To remove Scoot Skins:
- Separate the Skins from the hoof wall by placing a flat-head screwdriver in between the Skins and the hoof wall starting at the back of the Skins and gently working around the Skins
- Pick the hoof up and pull the Skins off
- Clean any debris out from the bottom of the hoof with a hoof pick
- Place the hoof on a hoof stand
- Use a rasp and sanding block to remove any excess glue off the hoof wall
The hoof is now ready to be trimmed.
Scoot Skins can be left on for a 5-6 week trimming cycle without a build-up of bacteria under the hoof.
Due to their design, Scoot Skins are self-cleaning and the entire sole of the hoof can be flushed out and medicated. This special feature saves the effort and expense of having to remove the Scoots to apply medicated hoof packing.

Scoot Boots and Scoot Boot accessories are made of thermoplastic urethane. Although this is a robust material, it can stiffen up when left in colder temperatures.
We recommend storing your Scoot Boots and accessories inside during cold weather. This will keep the straps flexible and stretchy.
Scoot Boots are expertly designed to have excellent ventilation and breathability to prevent overheating.
Ensure that you have the correct size Scoot Pads for your Scoot Boots. Having the exact size greatly reduces the movement of the Scoot Pad in the Scoot Boot. If you want to apply glue to the Scoot Pad we only recommend rubber shoe glue. We recommend you dot glue around the Scoot Pad and not smear it across the entire surface, as this makes it too hard to remove.

The majority of riders only use Scoot Boots on the horses’ front hooves.
This is because the front end of the horse bears 60-70% of a horse’s body-weight during motion. The rear legs mainly propel the horse forward and experience significantly less direct weight-bearing.
If you are riding endurance, riding over extreme surfaces or your horse’s hooves have not yet fully transitioned, you may require Scoots on all four hooves.
Go to our Blog Page for more information on transitioning your horse to barefoot.
A horse’s rear hooves are often narrower in shape compared to the front hooves, so they usually require a Scoot Boot Slim size. Our Scoot Slims function exactly like our Scoot Regulars except they are more suited to narrower back hooves and slightly contracted hooves.
The majority of horses only require Scoots on their front hooves unless their hooves are being transitioned to barefoot, naturally sensitive or travelling long distances or over extreme terrain.
Absolutely! Due to their minimal design and no cables, ties or velcro, Scoot Boots are the quickest and easiest hoof boot to fit and size up. They are as easy to put on as slipping on a sandal!
When you receive your Scoot Boots, try them on to check sizing before you ride. Boot up on a dry and clean hoof, on a dry, clean and soft surface such as a large rubber mat or piece of carpet. This will prevent your Scoots from becoming dirty or marked. Only use one Scoot Boot to confirm the fit for both of your horse’s hooves.
To confirm the fit of your boots check out our Fitting Page. Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com if you have any questions or you are unsure of the fit.
If you think your Scoot Boots might be the wrong size after using our Free Sizing Service, contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com.

To fit your new Scoot Boots, you need to:
- Ensure the Front Straps are undone and the Pastern Strap is detached from one side on the rear of the Scoot
- Pick up the hoof with the sole facing upwards in the trimming position and slip the toe of the hoof into the Scoot, the hoof should slip comfortably into the Scoot
- Pull the rear of the Scoot over the heel bulbs and place the hoof onto the ground
- The fit should be snug but not tight
- Check the fit of the rear heel bulb strap at the back of the Scoot by fitting a finger between the strap and the heel bulbs. If you cannot do this, your Scoots are too small. The strap should not be placing any pressure on the heel bulbs
- Secure the Front Straps on the Scoots by holding the end of the strap and stretching it over the knob hook at an angle and slip the elongated hole over the top or bottom edge of the knob hook. If you have difficulty securing these straps, use a hoof pick or needle-nose pliers
- Once your straps have been secured they should show an even amount of tension
- When the horse is standing upright with its leg at 90 degrees, secure the Pastern Strap around the horse’s pastern. Ensure that the strap is loose enough to be able to place two fingers between the strap and the front of the pastern
- The strap must be set correctly to function properly - not too loose or too tight. If you cannot place two fingers between the Pastern Strap and the pastern, loosen the Pastern Strap another hole. If the Pastern Strap is too tight the strap will pull the rear of the boot backwards and forwards over the rear of the hoof as the horse’s pastern flexes forward, and cause rubbing. This will not occur if the Pastern Strap is set at the correct length
- Pick up the hoof and gently twist both ways. The Scoot Boot should not turn on the hoof. If the Scoot feels loose they may be too big

To check the fit of your new Scoot Boots, you need to:
- Check the gap at the front of the Scoot. Place your horse’s hoof on the ground and secure the Front Straps. There should be a gap at the front, the size will depend on the shape of the hoof walls
- Check the wiggle of your Scoots. Lift your horse’s leg with one hand and grab your Scoot firmly with the other and wiggle gently from left to right. If the fit is correct the Scoot will not rotate or move. If there is any rotation, your Scoots are too big
- Check the bulb strap at the rear of your Scoots. Place your horse’s hoof on the ground and try slipping one finger between the heel bulb and bulb strap of your Scoot. If the fit is correct, you should be able to do this forcibly. If you are unable to place your finger between the strap, your Scoots are too small
- Check the space around the periphery of your Scoot. Place your horse’s hoof on the ground and observe the space around the periphery of your Scoots. If the fit is correct, the upper wall of the Scoot should be snug against the upper wall of the hoof

If your Scoot Boots are too small:
- You will be unable to fit your finger between the rear heel bulb strap and your horse’s heel bulbs
- You will have difficulty pulling the heel straps over the bulbs
If you think your Scoot Boots are too small, please contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com with pictures of your horse wearing the Scoots.

If your Scoot Boots are too large:
- The front gap of your Scoot will be less than 10mm (3/8”) wide when the Front Straps are secured
- Your Scoots will move and rotate when you wiggle them on your horse’s hoof
- The upper wall of the Scoot will not sit snugly against the wall of the upper hoof

No. If your horse’s hooves are a suitable shape for Scoots and the Scoots are the right size and correctly secured, they should not rotate on the hoof. If your Scoot Boot is rotating or moving on the hoof, you may have a size too big or your horse may require a correct barefoot trim.
You can check if your Scoot Boots move or rotate on the hoof by using the ‘wiggle test’. Lift your horse’s leg with one hand and grab the Scoot firmly with the other and wiggle gently from left to right. If the Scoot moves or rotates, they are too big.
If you think your Scoot Boots are too big, please contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com with pictures of your horse wearing their Scoots.
To check you are securing your Scoots correctly, please go to our Frequently Asked Questions Page.

If your Scoot Boots twist on your horse’s hoof, your Scoots are either too big or your horse’s hoof shape is unsuitable for Scoots.
If the twisting is minimal, we recommend you use Scoot Anti-Slip Shims to secure the fit of your Scoot Boots. Anti-Slip Shims are also a great aid when a horse is in between sizes or when conditions are dry and your horse’s hooves have shrunk.
Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com if the twisting continues.
Go to our Fitting Page for more information.
Sometimes new Scoot Boots have a sleek/shiny surface on the inside. You can remove this with fine sandpaper.
If your Scoots continue to twist after removing this polish, your Scoots may be too big. Please contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com or go to our Frequently Asked Questions Page.
Go to our Fitting Page for more information.
There are three reasons why your Scoot Boots may be too loose:
- The size is too big. A smaller size Scoot Boot should fix this issue. Alternatively, you could snug up the fit of your Scoots with Scoot Anti-Slip Shims
- Your horse was sized in wet weather conditions which can swell the horse’s hooves from absorption of moisture. In dry weather hooves dry out and shrink, and grow slowly. To fix this issue you can snug up the fit of your Scoot Boots with Scoot Anti-Slip Shims
- Your Scoot Boots may have stretched. Scoot Boots are just like a new pair of leather riding boots that stretch as they are broken in. Ensure that new Scoots are fitted on the snug side to prevent this from occurring
Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com or go to our Fitting Page for more information.
There are three reasons why your Scoot Boots may be forced open more than what is recommended:
- Your horse may need a correct barefoot trim. The toes may be too long, the hoof may be too wide for the boot, or the horse may be at the end of its trimming cycle
- If the gap is more than 15mm (5/8”) wide after the break-in period, your Scoots may be a size too small. Please go to our Fitting Page to check the fit of your Scoots and contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com for help
- The walls of your horse’s hooves are too vertical and therefore not suitable for Scoots. Horses with contracted feet usually have vertical hoof walls, as do mules, which prevents them from getting a secure fit in Scoot Boots. Scoot Enduros may be more suitable in these cases
Go to our Fitting Page or contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com for more information.
No, the correct sized Scoot Boots should not rub at all. If your Scoots are rubbing you may have the wrong size, the Pastern Strap may not be correctly secured or you may require more protective Gaiters.
If you are experiencing rubbing, please contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com with pictures of your horse wearing their Scoot Boots and one showing where the Scoots have rubbed.
Yes, we recommend you slowly break your horse into new Scoot Boots. Horses have different levels of sensitivity and Scoots may rub if you don’t break them in slowly.
Do a short ride the first time you use Scoot Boots. No more than 6 kilometres (4 miles). After your first ride the Scoots will mould to the shape of your horse’s hoof. Do this until you are sure that your Scoots are not chafing or rubbing. If there are no issues, gradually increase your riding distance. This will condition and toughen your horse’s skin.
Every new pair of Scoot Boots comes with a complimentary pair of Trail Gaiters. We recommend using these gaiters when conditioning your horse's skin with new Scoot Boots.
If your horse has extra sensitive skin or you are using Scoot Boots for long-distance and endurance riding, you may require a pair of Endurance Gaiters.
Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com if you have any problems with rubbing.
Yes, you can use wrapping tape on your Scoot Boots.
Scoot Boots are constructed of thermoplastic urethane (TPU). TPU is a very robust material with high abrasion and shock absorbing qualities, however it is affected by certain chemicals. You must keep your Scoots away from any likely contaminants which will compromise the integrity of your Scoots.
Please note, we have identified that the widely used equine product ‘VetWrap’ will cause a reaction with the TPU in your Scoot Boots. As a result, ‘VetWrap’ should not be secured to your Scoots. Your warranty will be voided if any damage occurs through the use of this. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.
Scoot Boots require a recent and correct barefoot trim to ensure a secure fit.
A natural, barefoot trim requires:
- Low heels. A barefoot horse does not require excessive heel length
- All flare removed from the hoof walls. A straight edge should be able to be placed from the coronet to the bottom edge of the hoof wall at ground level. There should be no space visible under the straight edge
- The ‘ground-bearing’ surface of the outer hoof wall bevelled. This prevents the hoof wall from chipping away. It also prevents the white line stretching and ensures a neat, strong hoof. The toe is short and rolled at a 45-degree angle to create a good break-over
Go to our Blog Page for more information.
You should trim your horse’s hooves every five to six weeks. When correctly sized, Scoot Boots will fit for an entire five to six week trim cycle. Do not go up a size to allow for growth between trims.
A horse’s hoof growth slows dramatically through the colder and drier months. In summer and winter, you can have increased riding time between trims unless you have a wet summer. Go to our Blog Page for more information about the changes in your horse’s hooves throughout the seasons.
If your horse is sensitive after having a barefoot trim, your barefoot trimmer or farrier may have rasped off the toe callus.
The toe callus is the area of the sole between the tip of the frog and end of the toe. This area should never be rasped on a barefoot horse. If the toe callus is rasped your horse will become foot-sore.
Go to our Blog Page for more information.
Shod horses require higher heels because when a metal shoe is placed onto a hoof, the toe of the hoof is immediately lengthened. This results in a slower break-over speed, which in turn increases lever forces on the tendons at the back of the horse’s front legs. To keep a shod horse sound and prevent tendon injuries, keeping a higher heel height temporarily neutralises the lever forces to the tendons.
Barefoot horses require a rolled short-toe so with correct trimming, there are very few lever forces present. As a result the heels can be kept low and maximum contact between the frog and ground can occur. This is not only beneficial to the hoof but the horse’s entire body.
Go to our Blog Page for more information.
No. Due to the shape of mule’s hooves, they are usually not suitable for Scoot Boots.
The walls of a mule’s hoof are too vertical and narrow to match the shape of Scoot Boots.
Scoot Enduros however are suitable for mules. Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com for more information.
Welcome to your barefoot journey!
Firstly, it is important to realise that there is a big difference between how your horse’s hooves are shaped now, and how they must be shaped to wear hoof boots. The shape of a shod hoof is different from a barefoot hoof that has had regular barefoot trims. A shod hoof has a lot more toe, heel and wall than a naturally trimmed hoof.
Once you have removed your horse’s shoes, you need to contact a knowledgeable barefoot farrier or trimmer and begin having regular barefoot trims every five-six weeks. Once the excess toe, heel and wall have been removed, you can start using hoof boots to provide extra protection and comfort to your horse.
Go to our Blog Page for more information.
No adjustment is required on the Scoot Boots as the boots are secured by the parts of the hoof that do not grow. If the correct sized Scoot is used, the security will come from the upper part of the Scoot Boot and not the Pastern Straps. This means Scoot Boots can fit throughout a five to six-week trimming cycle.
Yes. You can heat stretch Scoot Boots to get a custom fit.
With some hooves, Scoot Boots can fit perfectly around the periphery of the hoof. If the heel bulb straps are too tight however, too much pressure can be placed on the bulbs. Heat stretching with boiling hot water can fix this issue. To heat stretch your Scoot Boots you need to:
- Measure up your horse to determine how much to stretch your Scoots
- Place the heel bulb strap into boiling hot water for approximately 1 minute until the strap is soft enough to stretch
- Take the strap out of the water and stretch each side of the strap
- Hold the straps in the stretched position until your Scoot cools
- Dip your Scoot into cold water to ensure it is no longer hot
- When the Scoot Boot is cold, try it on the horse and adjust further if needed
Videos on heat stretching with boiling water can be found here.
Alternatively, you can use a heat gun to evenly heat the heel bulb straps. This is a less safe method and we recommend the use of hot water instead. Be careful not to heat the straps too much as this will burn your Scoots. Videos on heat stretching with a heat gun can be found here.
The heel straps must be stretched no greater than 5mm (1/4”). This equates to a full boot size. Over-stretching your Scoot Boots will compromise the fit. Heat stretching will also void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.
Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com for more information.
To achieve an optimum fit.
Your horse may have large heel bulbs with maximum digital cushion development making the heel bulb straps in your Scoot Boots extra tight.
Heat stretching is an option when the smaller size is too snug on the heel bulbs, but the next size up is too loose.
Contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com for more information on how to heat stretch your Scoot Boots.
Yes. You can heat stretch your Mud Straps.
To heat stretch your Mud Straps you need to:
- Place the Mud Straps in very hot water for approximately 1 minute
- Take the straps out of the water and stretch both ends
- Hold the strap in this position until the strap cools
- Once the strap is cold, you can use it on your horse
Please note that heat stretching will void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.
Alternatively, you can use a heat gun to evenly heat your Mud Straps. This is a less safe method and we recommend the use of very hot water instead. Move the heat gun up and down the strap approximately 5-10 cm (3-4”) away from the strap on both sides.

XXS 00 and 0
XS 1 and 2
S 3 and 4
M 5 and 6
L 7
XL 8
XXL 9
XXXL 10 and 11
Note - as there are so many variables to the size of a horses upper hoof, you may find the Mud Straps are a size too small. If this is the situation, you can easily extend the length 10mm (3/8") which will be the length of the next size up. Do this by heat stretching. If you have any queries about fit, please send us photos of the strap on the Scoot Boot to sizing@scootboots.com for advice. When you have the perfect fit - you will achieve maximum retention If too big - if the Mud Strap can be pulled down to comfortably reach the coronet band, then your Mud Strap is a size too big and will pull off the hoof with minimum pressure. If too small - if you cannot slip a finger comfortably around the periphery of the Mud Strap, then the Mud Strap is a size too small and will likely cause rubbing.

Use a heat gun or hairdryer to dry the hoof
- Use the back of a rasp to rasp off any oil and dirt off the hoof wall
- Use a sanding block to sand off any remaining dirt or oil
- Clean off any loose particles from the hoof with a rag and methylated spirits
- When the methylated spirits has dried, the hoof is ready for gluing
- Place a piece of masking tape over the vents on the outside of the Skins. This allows the glue to penetrate the area and form a plug
- Check the fit of the prepared Skins on the hoof. It should be snug at the front of the Skins with the toe forward. On the side of the hoof, the Skins should sit below the hairline. On the back of the hoof there should be no excessive overhang of the heel bulbs
- Mark the centre of the hoof with a pencil so the Skins will be straight and centred when you glue them on
- Fit your Adapter into the bottom of the Shufit Glue and put it in the glue applicator
- Remove the lid of the glue and attach the Mixing Tip
- Test your glue before putting it in the Skins, it should turn a light grey colour
- Generously apply the glue to each side, inside the Skins
- Place your horse’s hoof on a hoof stand
- Open the Skins
- Lift the hoof and place one side of the Skins onto the hoof, and then place the other side onto it
- Place the hoof back on the hoof stand and smooth out the glue
- Wrap the hoof in plastic wrap and hold the hoof above the ground for 2-3 minutes
We recommend Shufit Glue.
Other adhesive glues may contain chemicals that could contaminate your Scoot Boots and void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.
No. The side vents of your Scoot Skins provide an advantage when gluing.
Place a piece of masking tape over the vents on the outside of your Skins. This allows the glue to penetrate the area and form a plug, which adds to the strength of the glue.

Absolutely! Scoot Boots are very easy to clean as they are a ‘one-piece’ moulding. There are no ties, cables or velcro. They can simply be hosed off at the end of a ride.
Do not use any chemicals such as copper sulphate, insect spray, or cleaning agents on your Scoots. These may react with the material your Scoots are made of and this will void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.
As Scoot Boots are a one-piece moulding, they are super easy and simple to clean.
To clean Scoot Boots:
- Hose off any mud, grass or debris
- Leave them to dry
- Place the Scoots back in their tote bag and store them indoors in a moderate temperature
To clean Scoot Skins:
- Pick up your horse’s hoof
- Carefully lift open the bottom of the toe with a hoof pick
- Place the nozzle of a hose in the opening of the back of your Skins
- Ensure the water running into the back of the boot is filtering out the front of your Skins and is flushing out any debris that may have entered
- Remove the hoof pick
No. You can leave Scoot Skins on for a 5-6 week trimming period without creating hoof health issues.
Scoot Skins allow the sole to breathe as the design allows air to circulate. This helps prevent a build-up of bacteria or fungus. The soles can also be flushed out and medication can be applied during the 5-6 week setting.
Go to our Blog Page for more information on hoof health issues.
Scoot Boots are made of thermoplastic urethane which is sensitive to chemicals and extreme hot or cold temperatures. You must store your Scoots in their tote bag and hang them indoors at a moderate temperature.
If Scoots are stored in an air-tight container it can lead to hydrolysis where moisture can penetrate the TPU and break it down. This can also occur if Scoots are unused for long periods of time.
Yes, you can! Every pair of Scoot Boots is sold with spare hardware consisting of rivets, screws and knob hooks.
The tools required for replacement of the hardware on Scoot Boots are:
- A Phillips Head screwdriver (long shaft)
- A regular screwdriver
- A pair of wire cutters
- Thread locking glue
To remove Hardware:
- Remove the straps from the Scoots
- Cut the head of the rivet off the front of the Scoots with a pair of wire cutters
- Fit the Scoots with 6 knob hooks from the Scoot Boot Hardware Pack and secure them with a small amount of Loctite Glue
- Secure the straps back on the new hardware on the Scoots
Please note that Loctite 222, our recommended thread locking glue, may make removal of the screws difficult.
No, you cannot use any hoof oils or greases with Scoot Boots. Oils and greases are not necessary and make the inside of your Scoots slippery.
A horse’s hoof wall is approximately 70% water. When conditions are dry, moisture evaporates from the hooves and they reduce in size and become dry and brittle. You need to replace the lost moisture with water, not grease or oils.
Yes, Scoot Boots are made of thermoplastic urethane which is recyclable.
Check whether your local recycling depot provides a service for disposal of urethane products.
